First Snow of this Winter

Seattle woke up to its first snow of this winter on Sunday morning.

It started to fall at about 1:00a. When snow is on the ground, just one streetlight lights up the whole block brightly and the sound of the traffic is muted.

Three young adults sauntered past my house laughing and dragging a large piece of cardboard behind them. They were on their way to the hill a couple blocks away to do some improvised toboganning down the deserted street before the odd vehicle or two that would pass this way at that hour could ruin the virgin snow cover. It's hard to pass up an opportunity like that even if it is freezing cold and the rest of the world is asleep.

Here are scenes from my front window and balcony:

The footprints of the newspaper deliveryman leaving my Sunday newspaper at my front door sometime before dawn:

Nice cool photos, Louis. I have what may be a silly question - how is it that the footpath to your front door is not totally covered in snow? We have neither footpath nor driveway, just one large expansive white blanket.

I like the Hopscotch in snowy letters. :)

Stay warm!

Hi Louis
My first experience with snow was in New York in 1993. I didn't realised what it was until it fell to the ground.
It was a wonderful experience.
What is Christmas with the snow, eh?
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and family.

Rita,

Rita,
I have no idea why my footpath tends to resist snow. The previous occupants were themselves puzzled. They thought that perhaps the concrete stores up some warmth and so the snow doesn't accumulate very quickly. Be it that or some deity favoring me, I welcome this trait because I have had enough of shovelling snow in places where it snowed a lot.

That large white blanket outside your house must be pretty.

Selamat Fauziah,

Thanks for your kind Season's greetings.

Snow still fascinates me, especially when it tiptoes in very late at night and remains untouched by traffic for some time.

I am sure the snow you experienced in NY was far thicker than today's shower here.

Simply beautiful, and cold, i bet :D
I have no lie experience with snow; only artificial one. But yeah, it is in my list.

Wow! Louis, great posting of the beginning of winter. How I wish I am there in the room with you to watch that wonderful snow flake on the first day of winter. I love the first day as it is the day when the earth turn white, clean and innocent.

The first time I saw the first day of snow is when I was living in Boston ten years ago. One might have seen or walk on snow but it is the first day that made the difference. White snow all over and indeed a wonderful scene to see and feel the true color of White.

Those images were fantastic and it made me feel read good.

Have a nice day.

Yes, Pak Idrus, I agree, there's nothing like that first snowfall.

I especially like it when it occurs very late at night such as this one did. It brings with it a special hush and it's magic to look out through the curtains and see your normal everyday view transformed.

I am glad that this post prompted pleasant recollections for you.

Well, Akmal, I do hope you get your wish soon.

Louis ... Since I have yet to meet a deity or knew of anyone who has, the concrete reasoning makes more sense. :)

Have you seen this week's weather forecast? It's going to snow here again on Wed and the temperatures on Thurs and Fri are in single digits! Brrrr!

louis,
Read about toboganning in Enid Blyton's book when I was a small kid. I could visualize myself doing the same just by reading her book.
Like Akmal, I have yet to experience snow. Hopefully I will experience it once before meeting my maker.
Merry Xmas to you and your family.

Hi Rita,

Like you, I haven't yet met a deity and don't look forward too much to what holy books say is an inevitable meeting with one, and I also don't believe in ghosts. But I think I came face to face with a "Dato" twice in Malaysia. Will tell you the stories when we do eventually meet again :)

I think our weather newscasters here have migrated from Southern California where they characterize a quarter inch of rain as a "storm" and sensationalize the forecasts. So, you'll be able to tolerate the chill for the walk between your house and your Jacuzzi on Thursday and Friday.

Thanks for your Christmas greeting, Zawi.

Games in the snow, like tobogganing, are fun and can be easily improvised, like using a piece of cardboard or an old innertube for an exhilarating slide down a slope. Matter of fact, all you have to do sometimes to go sliding is try to walk on an icy sidewalk, but that can put you in the hospital. So be careful when you do have your first encounter with snow.

Once we get this global warming under control, there'll be still plenty of snow around whenever you get to travel to a cold climate.
